Last week, we went on our first family vacation to Montauk. My husband and I have been there many times prior to having kids and we love it! We even visited Montauk for our Babymoon. Since our kids love going to the beach and the pool, we figured it was time to take them on vacation to one of our favorite places, Montauk!
As I mentioned in a previous post, the kids usually nap in the morning so we left after breakfast so they would sleep the entire ride. Despite only going away for 3 days, our SUV was packed with our luggage, stroller, a pack and play, beach chairs, towels, beach toys, a beach tent, snacks, a diaper bag, etc. 3 kids = a lot of stuff: and I actually think we used it all!
Where We Stayed
We rented a 1 bedroom condo at the Beachcomber and it was perfect for us! The resort is located across the street from the beach and unlike many hotels in town, it has a pool which our kids loved. The condo was decorated beautifully with a light, bright, beachy look. The twins slept in the queen bed in the bedroom, my husband and I slept on the (very comfortable) pull out couch in the living room while the baby slept in the pack and play in the living room. Our unit had a large balcony with two lounge chairs and a table and chairs overlooking the beach. I loved that the unit had a full kitchen which came in handy for storing bottles, milk, and snacks in the fridge and reheating food for the kids in the microwave.
The first day, we walked around town and ate lunch outside at 668 Gig Shack. The food was fantastic and the kids enjoyed the live music. The twins were dancing most of the time while the baby napped in the stroller. We spent the rest of the afternoon in the pool and had dinner at sunset at Rick’s Crabby Cowboy Cafe. Rick’s is THE PERFECT place to eat for families. It is located in a marina on a lake with a lot of outdoor seating with big tables for large groups. Rick’s serves seafood and BBQ as well as kid friendly options like pasta, chicken nuggets, hamburgers, and mac and cheese. Kids can run around in the open area, play corn hole, check out the boats in the marina, and make s’mores over the open fire pits! You can buy s’mores kits at the restaurant and sit around a number of fire pits to enjoy summer’s favorite dessert. I think this is my husband’s favorite thing to do when we go to Montauk.
The next day, we walked across the street from our hotel and spent the day at the beach. The beach wasn’t crowded and the water was beautiful. The boys wound up falling asleep and napping most of the afternoon in a tent, so my husband and I played in the sand and looked for seashells with our daughter. That night, we drove over to Gosman’s Dock and had dinner at Gosman’s Restaurant. The weather was beautiful so we ate outside on the dock and the kids were able to watch the boats go by as we ate dinner. We had some delicious North Fork wine with our seafood dinner. I had an amazing swordfish with orzo salad with pesto and my husband loved his scallops with mushrooms and quinoa.
The next morning, we went to Bird On The Roof for breakfast. You walk through a beach boutique selling Montauk clothing, jewelry, hats, and toys in order to get to the restaurant. We sat on the back patio and had some great omelettes while the kids enjoyed pancakes and french toast. On the drive home, we stopped by Tate’s Bake Shop in Southampton to pick up some iced coffee and blondies. If you’ve never been to Tate’s, you can buy their amazing thin, crisp, chocolate chip cookies in specialty food stores and supermarkets. I’ve actually seen them in Costco recently and I have to resist not buying them. They are insanely good and I would probably go through the bag in a weekend.
Our first family vacation was a success and I’m glad that the kids had a lot of fun! There were so many things for the kids to do and see and everywhere we went, we saw other young families on vacation. Usually when we go out to eat, I’m always worried that other diners will get annoyed with us if the kids get cranky since we have 3 kids under 4 years old. However, there were young families at almost every table at every restaurant we visited so I felt more relaxed and felt like I was actually able to take my time and enjoy my meal.
Everything about our trip was perfect! I felt like my husband and I were actually able to relax and have fun with the kids. Since everything was new to them, it was so exciting to see them discover new things and new places. It felt like we were re-discovering Montauk while seeing it through their fresh eyes. I highly recommend taking a family vacation to Montauk. Our hotel was in a great location, spacious, close to everything, and there were so many things for kids to do. We are already talking about going again next summer.
Did you take a vacation this summer? Where do you like to go on vacation with your family?
